Alternative Transport in Spain

Alternative_transport_spainEntrepreneurial initiatives in alternative transport in Spain are gaining momentum, without resorting to the camel in the photo in cities! We’ve included information on a few in this article; some are economical, some ecological and all are examples of how to innovate during a recession.

Additionally Spain is heading for major changes with the pending deregulation of the taxi sector, the exact details of which are still to be announced this year.

BlueMove – Madrid

BlueMove offers car sharing with a difference – they have a fleet of cars in various car parks around Madrid (currently 14 locations) and you just pay for what you use. For example a small car is 2€ per hour plus 0.20€ / km. The price of fuel is included in the cost.

To use their service you need to register with BlueMove – registering is free and there are no monthly quotas. You’ll be given a “Bluecard” (smartcard), this is used to get into the car and you’ll find the keys inside.

BlueMove’s website is also available in English.

Cabify – Madrid & Barcelona

This company offers luxury cars with drivers but at affordable prices.  There are no pick-up charges or supplements (unlike taxis that charge extra for travel to/from airports or train stations) and, as you need to have an account with the company, you don’t need cash to pay at the end of your trip.

As well as requesting a journey via their website (www.cabify.com) you can also download their app making it easy when you’re out and about.

Current costs are 1.75€ / min when travelling at speeds over 24 km/h or 0.70€ / min when travelling at under that speed. Minimum charge is 10€ per journey but if you cancel at least 3 minutes before there is no charge. A 15% discount is available on your first three Cabify rides by using code QUIEROUNCABIFY.

Moto-Taxi

There are various companies in Spain that offer a taxi service by motorbike. These companies offer a good alternative in cities that have traffic problems to get across town to meetings. Also if travelling to an airport at rush hour with hand luggage you can be sure you won’t miss your flight.
