Cheap International Phone Calls (or Free!!)
We’ve rounded up information about some of the best apps and companies that offer cheap international phone calls, or even free calls from your smartphone. So whether you’re calling from your mobile, or prefer just to use your landline, there’s a solution for everyone.
From Your Smartphone or Computer
As most people already have a data package with their smartphone, it makes sense to download and install an app for free messaging or phone and video calls. Here are some of the best:
Skype: Try their service for one month free (valued at 10.49€). Skype offers many advantages such as video calls with up to 10 people, Skype to Skype calls for free and call forwarding.
Line (for mobiles): Line has over 400 m users worldwide (and growing). In 2014 they added international calls to their messaging service. Need to watch out with in-app purchases!
WhatsApp: Still not launched their free calls yet, but expected to do so this summer.
From Your Landline
Sometimes you’ll need, or want, to make an international call from your landline and that’s when VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) services are convenient.
If you carry out a search on Google, you’ll see that there are lots of companies that offer VOIP services. One of the most popular companies, Jajah, was purchased by Telefonica and the service closed in 2014. Here’s a guide to a few of the companies that offer cheap international calls and the pros and cons:
Dial Abroad: Can also be used from your mobile phone. Pros: Easy to set up, can pay by PayPal. Cons: Need to have a PIN, so you have to first call one number, enter your PIN and then dial the international phone number.
