Regional grants for household appliances, air conditioning and windows

One of the “problems” with regional grants in Spain is that each region decides when to launch them, how long they’ll last and how much will be available in funding. So, rather than being a national initiative which is easy to follow, you need to keep your eyes open to see when there are grants available for where you live. Here we offer an updated list (May 2012) of what’s still available. If you are thinking of taking advantage of any of these non-means tested grants, make sure you do it as soon as possible, as once funding runs out that’s it!

Appliances purchased must be classed as Energy Efficient Class A or above (A+, A++, A+++) and you can’t have received a grant for the same item previously. So, if you already received it for a dishwasher but now you want to buy an oven then you’re OK. Then you have to find a distributor that is officially certified to present the grant paperwork – just put in the town where you live on this link to get a full list. Once you’ve visited the store and chosen the item you want, you’ll have to produce your identification (NIE number) and the store will fill out the forms required for the grant and give you a copy. You’ll then be charged the price less the amount of the grant and when your new goods are delivered the distributor will remove the old ones and these will be taken to a recycling centre.

As an example of the amount of grant available (full list is available here), the maximum amount of the grant is 25% with a limit in euros depending on the energy rating as follows:

- Fridges, freezers, washing machines, diswashers:

85€/105€ for A / A+ rated items

125€ for A++

145€ for A+++

- For induction hobs and ovens: 85€
- For air conditioning (not portable): 400€

However, you’ll also need to take into account the savings you’ll enjoy over the lifetime of the new goods due to their efficiency – with estimates of a saving of over 500€ over the lifetime for a new washing machine.

Additionally there is another grant available if you install new windows in order to save energy. Both the frames and the glass have to be changed and the grants won’t cover balconies or similar areas that expand the square metre living space. Minimum cost of the new windows must be 1000€ and once again the grant is limited to 25% of the cost. The maximum amounts in euros depend on the window sizes. Grants will be applied directly on the cost charged by the company A pdf leaflet is available here that has full details on the grants and how it works. You can also see in the leaflet the euro grant depending on the window size to see how much you could get in total.

Grants for energy efficient appliances are available with the same rates as for Andalucía until 31 July 2012, or until funds run out. See details in Spanish here and the list of authorised stores.
Grants are available for the installation of air conditioning in your home until 1 Oct 2012 (or earlier if funds run out). The amount of the grant will cover up to 30% of the cost of the installation and machines, but not any masonry or similar works. Full information in Spanish is available here. All air conditioning machines installed must be energy efficient and you’ll have to purchase them at one of the stores included in the list of authorised dealers (just put in your post code at the link to see a list of stores near where you live. The store will take care of the paperwork and you’ll get the grant transferred straight to your bank account.
