Update: Free Wi-Fi now in 19 Spanish cities and towns

We have to admit that the coverage isn’t city-wide but we reckon it’s enough to suit most needs. For example, in Madrid there are over 50 points and in Malaga around 40.

Their original business model offers Wi-Fi connection based on locations at a number of strategic points around the cities and towns, which are nearly always newspaper kiosks (ever wondered why people were on their laptops near the newspaper stand?). Given the number of bars and cafeterias in Spain, we’re sure that you won’t have to stand outside in the rain getting your laptop wet – just find one near to one of the kiosks offering the service. Additionally in Madrid they’ve started offering the service on the municipal buses.

The info on their website is available in English: http://www.wifimas.com/en and their tariffs are as follows:

  • Free 30 minutes per day
  • 5€ for 24 hours
  • 10€ per month – however sign up for a year and you’ll get the monthly tariff for only 8€

(All prices include sales tax)

You can pay online using your credit card or by PayPal and the company states that the contract is “hassle free” and can be cancelled at any time.

New cities and towns are to be added in the future, so if they don’t cover where you live now, send them an e-mail suggesting your town.
